ESS sits on top of PayCare and connects to TimeMate and Accord, so what employees do on their phone reaches payroll with no manual steps, whichever way PayCare is deployed.
Self-service only works if people actually open it. A phone app is the difference between an HR portal nobody visits and one that gets used.
Profile, leave, reimbursements, payslips and reports in the place people actually look. An HR portal nobody opens is not self-service.
The routine asks ("where is my payslip", "how much leave do I have left", "did my request go through") get answered by the employee, not by your HR team.
JWT authentication against your own server, so an app on a personal phone never means opening your payroll database to the internet.
